The Sambaa K’e (salm-bah-k) candidate protected area is approximately 10600 km2 and is situated in the south-central Dehcho region

Importance of Sambaa K'e/Trout Lake

The people of Sambaa K'e want to protect the historic and cultural values of their traditional lands. There are many traditional burial sites and important cultural sites in this area.

The area is rich in wildlife and fish and is important for subsistence harvesting. Important boreal woodland caribou habitat extends throughout the area. Moose, wolverine, and many species of waterfowl are also found within the area.

The Sambaa K'e people still live a very traditional lifestyle and rely heavily on this land for their food and to keep their culture strong.
