Importance of Edéhzhíe
The richness and diversity of Edéhzhíe have made this
area a central cultural and spiritual gathering place for the Dehcho and
Tlicho peoples. This area has always been used for hunting, fishing,
trapping, and other traditional uses. There are numerous cultural sites,
harvesting areas and traditional trails through out Edéhzhíe.
The Horn Plateau is a unique landscape important in the
legends of the Dene. The Plateau stores huge quantities of freshwater in
its headwater lakes and muskeg that feed the Willowlake River, Horn
River and Mills Lake, that are important water sources for Dehcho
communities. The Plateau also supports an abundance of wildlife,
including boreal woodland caribou and moose.
Mills Lake is a key northern wetland that forms an
integral component of the continental flyway for migratory birds.
The Horn River connects the Horn Plateau to Mills Lake
and supports a number of fish species and a domestic fishery.
Willowlake River drains the Horn Plateau into the
Mackenzie River and provides important moose habitat, fish spawning
areas, and a rich berry picking area.
