Conservation Status
The Sambaa K'e area is now a Candidate Protected Area
with the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) as the sponsoring agency. CWS
will be working with the community towards permanent protection for the
area through the Canada Wildlife Act.
Most of the Sambaa K'e candidate protected area is
currently
withdrawn
through the Dehcho Interim Measures Agreement.
The Sambaa K'e candidate protected area is now entering
Step 5 of the PAS process and assessments of the area's ecological,
cultural and economic values are complete or in progress.
Context
Sambaa K'e
falls within the area covered by ongoing land, resource and governance
negotiations involving the Dehcho First Nations, the Government of
Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories. The
Sambaa K'e
PAS process will be taken into account in these negotiations.
Next Steps
A Sambaa K'e Working Group will be established to bring
together concerned parties to oversee assessments of the area's
ecological, cultural and economic values which will inform proposals
concerning possible protection of the area.
The establishment of a protected area through the PAS is
subject to approval by a number of parties, including the Government of
Canada.
