Conservation Status

The Sambaa K'e area is now a Candidate Protected Area with the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) as the sponsoring agency. CWS will be working with the community towards permanent protection for the area through the Canada Wildlife Act.

Most of the Sambaa K'e candidate protected area is currently withdrawn through the Dehcho Interim Measures Agreement.

The Sambaa K'e candidate protected area is now entering Step 5 of the PAS process and assessments of the area's ecological, cultural and economic values are complete or in progress.

Context

Sambaa K'e falls within the area covered by ongoing land, resource and governance negotiations involving the Dehcho First Nations, the Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories. The Sambaa K'e PAS process will be taken into account in these negotiations.

Next Steps

A Sambaa K'e Working Group will be established to bring together concerned parties to oversee assessments of the area's ecological, cultural and economic values which will inform proposals concerning possible protection of the area.

The establishment of a protected area through the PAS is subject to approval by a number of parties, including the Government of Canada.
