The
NWT Barren-ground Caribou Management Strategy 2006–2010
Caribou are one of
the most important resources in the Northwest Territories. Like many
species, caribou numbers fluctuate over time. Recent surveys and
information from traditional knowledge indicate that caribou herds are
currently declining across much of North America. Given this information,
the Government of the Northwest Territories, working in cooperation with
wildlife co-management boards, is taking action to ensure that caribou herds
throughout the NWT remain healthy and are able to increase in size again.
The government has developed a five year strategy to guide
management actions for barren-ground caribou.
The barren-ground caribou management strategy is outlined in
Caribou Forever – Our
Heritage, Our Responsibility. A Barren-ground Caribou Management Strategy
for the Northwest Territories 2006 – 2010.
