Bruce Ashley. 2000. Economic Benefits of Outfitted Hunts for Barren-Ground Caribou in the NWT. 48 pp.

ABSTRACT

A survey of the barren-land caribou outfitting industry in the North and South Slave Regions of the Northwest Territories (NWT) was done during the winter of 1999/2000 to estimate the benefits of the industry to the NWT.  Outfitter revenue and expenditures, and expenditures of non-resident hunters using the services of these outfitters were estimated.  This information was used in an input-output analysis to estimate the NWT economic impacts of barren-ground caribou outfitting.  The contribution to NWT gross domestic product of barren-ground caribou outfitting was estimated to be $3.13 million in 1999.  Between 109 and 179 seasonal jobs and 880 person-weeks of employment were estimated to have been provided to NWT residents by barren-ground caribou outfitters in 1999.  The NWT economic impact of each non-resident barren-ground caribou hunter was estimated to be $5,300.  Each caribou allocated to outfitting was estimated to have an NWT economic impact of $3,400.
